At Turners we care about plastic waste

9 December 2019

We take optical recycling seriously.

In light of the global impact of climate change and plastic on our oceans and landscape, at Turners, we believe in our social responsibility as as a community based eye care provider. Did you know?

  • By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish
  • 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean each year
  • 15% of contact lens waste in the UK is flushed away

That’s almost 3 quarters of a billion contact lenses, either flushed away or that go back into toxic land waste each year? Plastics discharged this way have dangerously contributed to the pollution of our marine environments.

Contact lens disposal needs to be treated carefully because they are not biodegradable and are generally made from plastic type materials such as hydrogel, silicone hydrogel, or non-hydrogel variants.

Contact lens packaging can be recycled by almost 100% percent. With growing concern about plastic pollution on the planet and particularly the use of plastics in the optical industry, at Turners in Bridgwater, Somerset, we are committed to ensuring that the manufacturing of most of our optical frames are predicated on sustainability.

In doing so locally, we aim to contribute globally to reduce our footprint on this planet and we are delighted at Turners to be in partnership with TerraCycle and Acuvue, and proud to introduce our own ‘Contact Lens Recycle Programme’.

At Turners opticians we can help you think locally and act globally with your lens recycling. So please collect ANY of your old contact lenses, ANY brand of blisters and foils packaging. Bring them to us and we will take care of the rest. You can even enjoy a cup of coffee on the house when you bring them in!

Together, we can ensure that contact lenses are safely and ethically recycled.
