RayBans

22 April 2019

At Turners, our collection of designer sunglasses inspire excitement each season.

The iconic Ray Ban sunglasses, produced since 1937 is a reminder that you cannot improve on classic form or function. A testimony to the land personifying the spirit of freedom. Each piece is faultless and sets the trend for sunshine weather.

Personifying understated cool style, RayBan was born in 1937 and actually created by Bausch & Long, a medical equipment manufacturer, for the US Airforce. The ‘Club Master’ and ‘Aviator Classic’ became two of the most iconic sunglasses in the world. American celebrity endorsing for RayBan classics came from: James Dean in the eponymous ‘Rebel without a Cause’, Peter Fonda in the thrilling 60’s hipster highway ‘Easy Rider’, Kim Novak in her cool Hitchcock presentations and with the signature style of Bob Dylan influencing a generation of beat poets.

Bausch and Lomb designed the worlds first prototype ‘Anti-glare B-15 XLT’ lenses for pilots to reduce the distracting intensity of blue and white sky hue at high altitude. Essentially, plastic frames and green lenses that could cut out the glare without obscuring vision. They also added impact-resistant lenses in 1938, which led to the sunglasses being redesigned with a metal frame and then patented as the Ray-Ban Aviator. In “101 Things to Buy Before You Die” (Williamson, Charlote; Davis Sept 2007, New Holland Publishers), wearing a piece of airforce history with your RayBan, was cited a must!
