Myopia Control

Understanding Myopia in Children

Children often won’t express difficulty seeing, but myopia (short-sightedness) could be the cause. This condition occurs when the eye grows too long, making distant objects appear blurry while nearby ones remain clear. Myopia usually begins in childhood and tends to worsen through young adulthood, leading to a greater reliance on glasses, thicker lenses, and potentially affecting a child’s confidence.

What’s more, myopia can increase the risk of more serious eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, and glaucoma. Factors like genetics, lifestyle, and environment—particularly too much close-up work and time spent indoors—can influence its development. Early onset myopia is particularly concerning, as it tends to progress more rapidly, leading to more severe vision issues as they grow older. Early detection and management are key to minimising long-term effects.

Slowing Myopia Progression

While myopia (short-sightedness) can’t be cured, certain methods can help slow its progression—effectively “putting the brakes on” its development. The key is how the eye focuses light, and the earlier management begins, the better the long-term results.

Rodenstock’s MyCon lenses are designed to help by diffusing light so it strikes the peripheral part of the retina in front, rather than behind it. This process helps slow the growth of the eye length. With MyCon lenses, the areas that control myopia progression are located laterally, minimising any impact on visual acuity above or below.

In today’s world, children spend more time on screens than outdoors, contributing to an increase in short-sightedness over the past two decades. At Concept, we have a solution to help manage this progression for your child.
