This is a report from our lovely optometrist Sally who took time out from the practice to go and talk to some of the children from Eastover School:
‘I visited Eastover School on the 12th November to speak to Year 3 pupils about being an optometrist and how eyes work. The children had recently been learning about light and colours and how we need light to be able to see.
I started with explaining what an optometrist does, we found out who had had their eyes tested before and then they all sat in 3 groups according to eye colour.
Then using the model eye, I described how light travels through the eye and what each of the main structures do. The children particularly enjoyed the eye being taken apart piece-by-piece – anything gruesome!
I then asked them to think about why we have 2 eyes and we did some 3D activities.
We also discussed animals eyes, looked at optical illusions, talked about how to look after your eyes and some pupils had a contact lens to feel in their hands.
The session finished with questions and each child had information and activities to take home.’
